You should be careful any time you go driving on a holiday weekend. Over New Year's Eve, Missouri police had to contend with 127 DWI cases, 352 crashes and 112 injuries that occurred as a result of drunk driving.
Another winter holiday may result in more drunk driving cases: Valentine's Day. Many couples go out to drink during this holiday, but you want to be careful you do not end up with a DWI charge. Here are some tips for having a fun holiday with the person you love without risking a trip to jail.
Book a night in a hotel
The best way to avoid driving under the influence is to stay off the roads entirely. There will be DWI checkpoints in several Missouri and Illinois cities that night, so instead of risking it, you can book a night in a hotel. You can find a fantastic restaurant nearby and walk to the hotel to spend the night. That way, you and your date can drink as much as you want without getting behind the wheel.
Hire a private car
You can avoid drinking and driving while showing your partner how much you love him or her by hiring a private car for the night. This is actually much more affordable than you may think. You can book a limo, which is great if you have a few destinations in mind for the night. However, there is nothing wrong with booking a taxi, Uber or Lyft to get you home.
Create a fun night in
You do not have to leave your home to have a memorable Valentine's Day. You or your partner can cook dinner and watch a movie at home. Another option is to celebrate Valentine's Day on a different day. If you go out on February 14, you can expect crowded bars and booked reservations. You can go out the next week or the week before to avoid the crowds. No matter what day you celebrate with a loved one, don't drink too much alcohol and get behind the wheel.
