How can I prevent drunk driving?

Drunk driving puts everyone at risk on Missouri roads. The best way to protect everyone is to prevent a driver from getting behind the wheel. It is not always easy to do, but there are some things you may try. MADD has suggestions for a way to help prevent someone you know from becoming a drunk driver.

The main thing is to keep in mind that you are trying to prevent a tragedy. Stopping a friend or loved one from driving impaired is the main goal. It is far better to have that person mad at you for a little bit than to let him or her drive and possibly lose that person forever in an accident.

With that in mind, you should approach the person in a non-confrontational way. Do not get pushy or argumentative. Remember that his or her reasoning is impaired, too. It may not be clear that driving is a bad idea at that point. It is smart to try to get his or her keys. This puts you more in control.

If you cannot get the keys, try making an alternative suggestion. Ask the person to stay over at your house or offer to drive him or her home.

You may also get others to help you, especially if the person is combative or upset. Explain you do not want him or her to get hurt.

The bottom line is to not let someone get behind the wheel when they have had too much to drink. If all else fails, you should call law enforcement because that may be the only thing that saves your friend or loved one's life. This information is for education and is not legal advice.
