Facing criminal charges? What to consider before the plea deal

On Behalf of | Aug 15, 2018 | Criminal Law |

The one thing that you probably never expected to occur is for you to be accused of committing a crime. Whether you are facing multiple charges or one in the St. Louis area, and if it is your first time in trouble or not, it is not the end of the world if you act quickly and logically.

As much as you would like to fall back and leave everything in the hands of your attorney, it is crucial for you to learn everything you can about your situation so you can make an informed decision about the plea deal you have been offered. That includes carefully reviewing with your attorney any plea deal offers you receive. Here are a couple of reasons why you might want to accept one:

There is evidence against you

Just because the police/prosecution have evidence that links you to the crime you allegedly committed does not mean that you are going to end up with a guilty charge. It also does not mean that you will get the maximum sentence for that offense. However, depending on the nature of the crime, you might find it more beneficial to consider a plea deal for a lesser sentence. Some crimes carry very harsh penalties for even first-time offenders. Plea bargains usually offer more favorable terms in exchange for you pleading guilty to a lesser offense

Do not want to take chances

You have the option of going to trial in front of your peers. However, the risk of having your fate decided by your peers in court is a gamble that could bring about an unexpected outcome, usually in the form of a stricter sentence and conviction. Taking a plea deal enables you to protect your record and lessen the effects of the situation on your life, career, etc.

Plea deals are not for everyone. You should always weigh the pros and cons of any bargain you receive against the consequences and potential impact of the criminal charges you are dealing with.
