17-year-old arrested at school after alleged hacking incident

Computers, cell phones and other related technologies are a vital part of everyday life for St. Louis residents. This is especially the case when it comes to younger individuals, who have grown up using computers and could not imagine life without them.

While there are many positive aspects to this technology, it can also present dangers when individuals are accused of running afoul of the law. Indeed, with the advent of new technologies comes an entire new area of computer and internet crime.

For instance, a 17-year-old boy was recently arrested after law enforcement accused him of hacking into his school's computer network. The boy was allegedly logged into a computer in a classroom at the school, and police arrested the boy after claiming the breach of the computer system was traced to that computer. The boy is now facing one charge of tampering with computer equipment, although officials indicated any damage suffered by the computer system had already been restored by IT professionals working at the school.

Incidents like the above demonstrate how beneficial technologies can become troublesome after accusations of wrongdoing occur. In these instances of alleged cybercrime, the individuals accused should understand their rights and the need to present an effective criminal defense to the charges. Even relatively minor crimes like the above can stay on a person's record for years, and they could lead to other punishments outside of the criminal justice system as well, such as repercussions at school or work. Accordingly, every charge of cybercrime should be taken very seriously and should be responded to with vigor.
