Child pornography charges brought against teacher

It is always a serious matter when a St. Louis resident is charged with a criminal offense. Yet, some charges are more serious than others and demand a greater response from the individual charged.

One of the most serious charges a person can face is a child pornography charge. For instance, one high school teacher in a neighboring state is facing federal charges of possessing child pornography and attempted creation of pornography using minors; penalties could entail up to 30 years in prison on just one of the charges if the man is convicted. Authorities allege the man, who taught math and coached the cross country team, attempted to use minors to produce child pornography on multiple occasions. Images of child pornography were allegedly found on the man's computer, and he is also facing state charges for another incident.

In addition to the severe jail time that can result from federal child pornography charges, individuals can face many additional years of scrutiny after they are required to register as a sex offender. There are a variety of federal and state sex offender laws that exist, which typically require individuals to refrain from certain conduct and report their whereabouts to the community. Further restrictions govern where a person can live, such as not residing near schools, and potentially being subject to other restrictions as well, like restrictions on a person's behavior on Halloween.

In sum, given the gravity of the charges and the potential penalties that can result, individuals facing these charges should strongly consider mounting a vigorous child pornography defense. Whether challenging search and seizure issues, an unlawful arrest or simply putting the government to its stringent burden of proof, individuals may have several defenses to the charges against them which can result in a dismissal or reduction of the charges if successful.
