Businessman facing 20 years in prison on federal charges

Many St. Louis residents have a general familiarity with different types of crimes, usually based on what they see on television or read in the news. Individuals may be less familiar with what types of penalties are imposed for different types of crimes and they might be surprised to learn of the severity of the penalties for particular crimes.

Federal charges, in particular, can result in drastic sentences that may be imposed if a person is convicted of the charges. Federal sentences often are much more severe than similar state charges; therefore, it can make a world of difference where a person is charged and what the particular allegations are in a case.

For instance, white collar crime can carry hefty sentences. One businessman, for example, is currently facing up to 20 years in prison after pleading guilty to three felony wire fraud charges brought by federal prosecutors. The business owner was alleged to have taken about $350,000 from several customers whom he had helped refinance loans.

Given the severity of the penalties available for federal charges, it is vital that individuals facing those charges vigorously defend themselves against the charges. This is particularly important in white collar crime cases, which can involve intricate factual details and complex situations. Prosecutors may bring charges against a person involving financial schemes, for example, which require attention to detail and experience to defend against. By working with a qualified defense attorney who understands this area of law, individuals can formulate an effective defense strategy to the charges.
