Crime cameras: the new witness in St. Louis

Do you ever wonder how police find criminal suspects? One of the most common ways local authorities build a case is through witness statements. Police interview individuals near a crime scene to help decipher who may be linked to or responsible for the particular crime. However, what happens when locals refuse to speak up? If hard physical evidence is unavailable, it may be difficult for police to connect the dots.

No snitching in St. Louis

Now, authorities are taking investigations a step further. According to Ward 27 Alderman Chris Carter, crimes are being committed, but witnesses are not talking. This makes it more difficult to locate suspects. As a result, cameras will be installed in north St. Louis in an effort to not only deter crime, but also find it.

Crime cameras along West Florissant

Authorities are spending $43,635 to install cameras at a few locations along West Florissant. The area is considered a hot spot for crime, including homicides. The cameras will connect to the Real Time Crime Center, a network of approximately 400 cameras all over St. Louis that are monitored by police.

The cameras will undoubtedly change the way authorities investigate and handle crime in the local community. Police hope that the cameras put locals on notice.

More cameras to come

This is not the end. Alderman Carter notes that police intend to add more video surveillance to other "problem areas" across St. Louis. This may include installing cameras in businesses and on homeowners' property, with permission.

Ultimately, authorities in St. Louis are experiencing difficulty charging and convicting criminal suspects. Frankly, this is because the evidence does not always exist. If you have been charged with a crime, do not let this new initiative scare you. You have rights - even if police have cameras. Moreover, evidence can be excluded from a criminal matter before trial.
